Saunton Golf Club

About the course

If another seaside course is needed for the Open Championship, then the East Course at Saunton Golf Club is certainly a good candidate. The Saunton course has never hosted The Open but has hosted other major events. In 1997 Sergio Garcia won the Boys’ Amateur Championship here, beating Richard Jones 6-5.

Saunton is situated on the beautiful unspoilt North Devon coast. On the edge of Bideford Bay and the Taw Estuary lies Braunton Burrows. Unesco has designated the sand dunes at Braunton Burrows as internationally important and it is the first site in the UK to become a Biosphere Reserve. The area is unique as it is home to over 500 species of plants; many of which, including the water germander, are extremely rare. The area now ranks alongside Vesuvius and the Danube Delta.
