Walton Heat Old

About the course

Walton Heath hosted the 1981 Ryder Cup between the USA and Europe.

It was a stroke of genius by Mr Herbert Fowler when, with his prophetic eye, he beheld the grandeur of the golf course at Walton Heath,” wrote Bernard Darwin. “It was in August 1902 that Mr Fowler began his survey. In April 1904 James Braid moved from Romford to Walton and in May the course was opened to a proper blare of trumpets,” Darwin wrote in his biography of James Braid. James Braid remained a professional at Walton Heath until 1950.

Surprisingly, Walton Heath Golf Club did not receive a Royal Charter, even though the Duke of Windsor was captain of the club in 1935. During the year he was captain, Edward VIII became King. Walton Heath is the only club in history to have a reigning monarch as captain. His tenure as captain probably lasted longer than his reign on the throne. King George VI was also an honorary member and Winston Churchill played golf here as a member from 1910-1965.
