Burnham & Berrow (Championship)

About the course

Hole follows hole and the endless series of hills goes on and on, and from the top of each we have the most beautiful view, with Cheddar Gorge in the distance; the Bristol Channel to the left, with the islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm and the vast misty countryside on the other side. As we turn towards home on the ninth, we see the sand hills stretching stormily into the distance towards Weston, with their range of fantastic shapes, and the occasional narrow, meandering ribbon of sod between.” Burnham in Somersetshire was Bernard Darwin’s favourite playground, so it seems fitting to have him introduce Burnham & Berrow.

Burnham & Berrow Golf Club was founded in 1890 and soon afterwards they hired a young man called J. H. Taylor. His job was to be the club’s first professional and greenkeeper. Taylor, one of the great triumvirate, won the Open Championship five times.
