History
The first mention of the town from archaeological findings dates back to the 6th century. St Andrews was granted official status as a royal town in 1124. The town was an important port in the Middle Ages, but after the Civil War the population was greatly reduced and many buildings were destroyed. Thereafter, a gradual rebuilding of the town began. Scotland’s oldest university (the University of St Andrews) was founded in 1410 and is still regarded as one of the best universities in the UK. Of the historic buildings, St Rule’s Tower and Holy Trinity Church have survived to the present day. Also worthy of note are the remains of St Andrews Cathedral, the remains of the castle and the medieval Dominican chapel – Blackfriars Chapel.
