A little bit of Old Course history
The founding of the course dates back to 1552, marking its 470th anniversary in 2022. For a long time the Old Course has been shaped entirely by nature, but a large part of its current appearance is due to Messrs Daw Anderson and Old Tom Morris. In the late 18th century, when the architecture was still 22 holes, it was decided that some holes were too short, so they were merged and the Old Course was given the distinctive character of an 18 hole course. The course as we know it today was created around 1863 by the aforementioned Old Tom Morris when he had the 1st and 17th greens separated. The Old Course is the home tournament for The Open Championship, which has been hosted here for 30 years, the most of any championship course.
Characteristics of the course
The course is set in a beautiful coastal landscape and the main landmark is certainly the iconic stone bridge. This is a classic links course, which despite its rather flat shape offers a lot of interesting places where you have to show really good strokes. Colossally large greens, sometimes unpleasantly undulating terrain and a number of heavy bunkers will test the skills of any golfer. Many players have admitted that some of the bunkers and depressions were literally a curse for them.
