One of golf’s greatest traditions is now a thing of the past
The St Andrews Links Trust has introduced a daily draw for individuals to replace queuing for available playing places at the Old Course, St Andrews’ most hallowed golf course
For decades, golfers visiting the home of golf were promised one thing: if you really wanted to play the old course, you could.
Even if the local lottery on the Old Course didn’t work out ; even if you didn’t have any friends who could book a tee time; even if the travel agent was just too expensive – golfers still had a chance to get a playing spot by lining up singles and staying overnight in front of the Old Course pavilion.
However, the St. Andrews Links Trust’s message to you is, “Never again!
As announced by the Links Trust on Wednesday, a new system will begin on March 12 whereby individuals will register for golf in person (at the same location where golfers previously camped) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day before play
How it works:
1. Visit the Old Course Pavilion on the first hole of the Old Course
On the day before play, visit either The Old Pavilion next to the first tee of the Old Course or the St Andrews Links Clubhouse between 9am and 5pm.
2. Enter your details
Upon arrival, complete the entry form using the available tablets. This includes providing some personal information such as your name, contact details and handicap.
3. Sending a photo
Submit a clear and identifiable photo of yourself using a tablet to serve as your main means of identification during the draw.
4. Receive confirmation
You will receive a confirmation of your participation after you have successfully entered the draw. This will be in the form of an email and a text message if you have provided your phone number.
5. Wait for the results of the draw
The draw will take place at 17:00 and the results will be drawn. All available slots on the Old Course will then be allocated in chronological order from the top of the list. You will be notified by email and text message if you have been allocated a tee time for the following day.
6. Accept TeeTime offer
If you receive an offer of playing time on the Old Course, make sure you accept it within the time limit to secure your place. If you do not accept the offer within the time limit, it will be passed on to the next person on the waiting list.
7. Confirmation and payment of the game fee
If you accept the tee time offer, be sure to check in at The Old Pavilion at least 20 minutes before your scheduled tee time. You must also pay the appropriate game fee at this time. A valid handicap certificate (paper or digital) must be presented to the Old Course starter on the day of play. If you have requested a caddie or rental clubs, The Old Pavilion team will assist you upon arrival.
