Kingsbarns Golf Links: a Scottish gem with a rich history and stunning scenery

04.05.2024 | Scotland

Situated just 11 kilometres from St Andrews along the picturesque 2.9 kilometres of North Sea coastline, Kingsbarns Golf Links is one of the most sought-after golf courses in the world. With every hole looking out to sea, this course captivates golfers with both its beauty and its challenge.

History dating back to the 18th century

The Kingsbarns course has a rich golfing tradition dating back to 1793. Back then, men in blue coats gathered here to compete for coveted medals on the links course and then enjoyed the friendly atmosphere in the clubhouse. This tradition sadly came to an end in 1850 when the tenant of the Cambo Estate had the course ploughed up and converted into farmland.

Fortunately, in 1922 Lady Erskine of the Cambo Estate restored the old Kingsbarns Golf Society and founded the new Kingsbarns Golf Club. The nine-hole course was designed by Willie Auchterlonie and served golfers until the Second World War when it was mined and overgrown for safety reasons.

A new life in the 21st century

At the beginning of the 21st century, Kingsbarns playground saw a rebirth. It became the only Scottish course built on links land in the last 70 years. With its unique seaside setting, Kingsbarns has become one of the legendary courses around St Andrews and Carnoustie, bringing a new dimension to the traditional Scottish game of golf.

Exclusive experience with a price tag

Kingsbarns Playground values its exclusive status. Green fees in 2024 exceed £400 per person, making it one of the most expensive courses in the UK. Despite this price tag, Kingsbarns is still a popular destination for golfers from all over the world who want to experience the unique atmosphere and beauty of this Scottish gem.
